What is Dermatology Nursing?

Dermatology nursing is a specific field within nursing that concentrates on the care and treatment of skin disorders and conditions.

Skills of a dermatology nurse include:

Assessment and treatment of skin conditions - including rashes, lesions, wounds, moles and infections.

Patient education – on skin conditions, treatment options, and proper skincare practices.

Clinical procedures - such as wound care, biopsies, and minor surgeries under the supervision of a dermatologist.

Medication Administration - including topical treatments, injections, and oral medications.

Providing support and guidance - with chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, acne, and skin cancer.

To become a Dermatology Nurse in Ireland:

Complete a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSc) degree. During your nursing education, you will cover foundational knowledge and skills in nursing practice. Once you have completed your education you must register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) as a Registered Nurse (RN). 

Look for nursing posts that provide exposure to dermatology or plastic surgery. Dermatology nursing positions require a few years of nursing experience. However, some private settings may offer a more direct route.  

Advancing your training and education in dermatology nursing can take many forms. This could involve completing postgraduate courses, attending workshops or conferences, or participating in on-the-job training programs specifically focused on dermatology nursing.
